BENIGN PAROXYSMAL POSITIONAL VERTIGO

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a disorder affecting one of the three balance canals (semicircular canals) of the inner ear. The affected individual will typically describe very specific symptoms of dizziness that will occur when lying down and turning to the affected side or extending the head and turning it to the affected side.

BPPV is thought to occur due to head trauma, a viral process or a nonspecific immune reaction. In response to this inflammation, particles will form in the affected inner ear canal, which when stimulated will cause the symptoms.

Treatment involves particle repositioning maneuvers, including the Eppley, which may performed at home or under the care of a professional. The repositioning maneuvers are almost always effective in resolving symptoms. In rare situations however, surgery may required to manage the problem.
